Jack Matthews
Novelist, Historian
Jack Matthews’ fiction and nonfiction originates in northern New Mexico. From climbing the Truchas Peaks to D. H. Lawrence’s ranch to the old Dona Luz Restaurant, Jack’s work encompasses living with the land and people in and around Taos since 1967. The Taos News Tempo says his novel, Death at La Osa, has “layers of authentic detail.” The Santa Fe New Mexican Pasatiempo calls Jack’s work, “In [Tony] Hillerman’s footsteps.” Jack says, “I write about the interplay of the three cultures in northern New Mexico and Taos: Puebloan, Hispano, and Anglo.” Sunstone Press of Santa Fe published his first novel and is looking forward to his second and third novels of the series. Having accomplished archaeological field school at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, his work is deep in the Ancient Puebloan and Navajo past. He holds a Ph.D. in history and has lectured on Georgia O’Keeffe at the Harwood Foundation. Jack currently writes at his daughter’s home on Monterey Drive in Taos and near Burned Mountain in the Tusas.
